I saw the towers

Over Sting's shoulder in the video for "An Englishman in New York".

It's always a shock to remember that they're gone.

It's even worse when I remember that I always thought they were a blight on the landscape.

I got a little teary at Christmas when we flew into Newark. I still can't get used to the new skyline. I know a lot of people thought they were ugly, but they were so quintessentially New York. Whenever I used to take the subway anywhere south of midtown, I would look for them as soon as I came out, to orient myself and make sure I didn't start walking in the wrong direction. They were such a useful landmark...

I have a photo of a dear friend with the towers in the background. The friend died in June of 2002. The whole picture is gone.

One of the things I really wanted to do after 9/11 was visit ground zero before it was built up again. I still haven't been there. :( But thanks for the reminder... it's something I really have to do.

Our reminders come every day, twice a day at 9:11. Every time I see a tv show with the towers, I kind of flinch a little.

Every day our firetruck-obsessed 2yo watches a kids' documentary featuring the NYC fire dept. The video was made in the early '90s. Even after a thousand viewings I'm still not inured to it.
