Things I learned today

  • Rented ice skates are truly ugly.
  • Once around an ice rink is an extraordinarily long distance when you are trying to teach someone how to ice skate.
  • I am NOT qualified to teach anyone how to ice skate.
  • Despite the fact that I suck as a teacher, Muffin Man thinks ice skating is a hoot, and wants to go again. He fell several times but laughed each time and was able to get back up again pretty quickly.

I ache all over. Mom, I'm so grateful to you for teaching me how to skate. Now, could you teach me how to teach MM?

Our girls are begging to go ice skating and we have not made it yet. I dread it. Really I do.

When you figure it out, will you share your secrets with us? I'll be there in a year or two!

I can ice skate. I’ve got these moves that drive the women crazy. Imagine if you will, an airplane coming down the runway with the propellers going full blast. I’m talking about a tall, skinny airplane. It’s hard to look good when you spend more time on your butt than on your skates, but I can pull it off. All I really know about ice is it’s hard to drive on and it is added to my ice tea and mint juleps. It looks so easy on TV, too. Go figure!

I love ice skating! Curious Girl got freaked by the zamboni the one time we went last year--she was actually doing pretty well on the ice. I'm hoping she'll go back.

Do you need to be taught to ice skate, or is it one of those things that people just pick up when some little coordination switch has been flipped in the brain? (I'm wondering the same thing about swimming.)

I want to take the girls ice skating at the new downtown rink but I spend more time on my butt so I don't think I am a qualified instructor.

I took Ella skating (Chloe absolutely refused to even try) and she had a great time, but probably in part because one of the other parents at the skating party knew how to skate well and taught Ella as well as her own daughter. I can more or less do laps around the ice, but teaching it? No way.

I'm so glad MM had a good time. My sisters are going to have to teach my kids how to skate, because I have weak, crooked ankles that hurt like crazy within 5 minutes of lacing up skates, even if I'm not actually trying to stand on them.

Luckily, my sisters have both been competition skaters and assistant skating instructors. :)

I have never ever been ice skating. I have ice envy. It was 38 here today (that's 99 for those of you using the farenheit scale) We spent the hot bits in the local pool. I'll be in Minneapolis in 2 weeks. Maybe it'll be my ice debut?

You didn't say whether your toes were numb. Were your toes numb? Rented skates suck.

I suggest paying for lessons for Muffin Man, if you think he seriously wants to learn.

That makes my ankles hurt just thinking about it!
