A dilemma

MM got a strike at school today...for talking at lunch. Apparently the teachers made it a quiet lunch when the kids were getting too noisy.

Normally, our rule is no screen-time for a day after a strike. But I just can't get het up about talking at lunch. I mean...he's six. He needs time to socialize at school. I'm just not feeling any enthusiasm for enforcing this one.

So we said no screen time tonight, but he can get it back in the morning 'cause he did such a great job otherwise at school this week.

So I'd like you to vote:
Reasonable or Wishy-washy?

Reasonable. But I always worry about undercutting the teacher's authority. So I think you played it well, down the middle.

You done good. You backed up the teacher while still allowing for some wiggle room.

As a parent, I think the "no talking" at lunch thing is sort of ridiculous. They can't talk in class, they can't talk in the halls -- when else CAN they talk?

As a teacher who has lunch duty EVERY day, though -- you would not believe the noise just one class of kids can make. Our cafeteria echoes like you wouldn't imagine (as most of our schools do, being made primarily of cinder block) and if ONE class gets rowdy, all the others get loud, too. Pretty soon, the noise is like a wave crashing over you, unstoppable and crushing. The kids I watch over know that I allow them to talk. Within reason. I do fuss at them if they're talking with food in their mouths, or talking and not eating. Our mantra is "eat first, talk later." They get a lot of chances to quiet down or bring the noise level down before we institute silent lunch.

I think you did right.

Reasonable...

Taking talking away from Kindegarteners at LUNCH?

I think it was a balanced approach of there are still consequences for a "strike" even if I happen to disagree with the rationale behind it. Kind of a good opener for a "life's not always fair" talk, dontcha think?

Very reasonable. I'd have given in and let him have screen time because seriously? No talking at lunch??

reasonable, but Madeleine's point about undercutting authority is valid, and could probably use a brief talk. How can anyone expect 6ers to be quiet all the time?

Totally reasonable. That is a little silly, I have to admit.

No talking at lunch??? And people are always telling us homeschoolers that we need to send our kids to school for the socialization. LOL.

I'd say your approach was totally reasonable. You're a great mom--follow your instincts.
