Talking about chores

Muffin Man is nine, and he has the following chores:
  • Feed and otherwise take care of the gerbils (I help with their monthly re-bedding).
  • Set and clear the table, including pouring drinks for the family
  • Empty the dishwasher
  • Put away his clothes (I admit to being pretty lax about this).
  • Keep the play room tidy
  • Empty the waste baskets
  • Make his own week-day breakfast (cold cereal and milk).
What chores do you have your kid doing? Is MM getting off easy, or are we too hard on him?

J, age 11, has some similar chores, though we're not as regular about them as we should be, so sometimes they pile up. Loading and unloading the dishwasher, doing laundry loads whenever needed (his own but also helping with family laundry), and helping carry things on grocery trips and unload groceries. Helping with things like raking.

Oh, and making his own weekday breakfast and sometimes packing his lunch.

We used to have a family meeting, show a list of chores that had to be done, and let the kids pick which ones they would do. Usually they'd have to chose one major one (like clean the kitchen, or clean the living room, or laundry helper).
