I am sitting here steaming mad at myself because I've done it again. I've gnawed on my fingers so badly that two of them are bleeding. One of them looks hideous (bleeding in two places), the other isn't so bad. A third bled yesterday, but is better today. A fourth is healing pretty well from last Thursday.
On the other hand, my nails are looking good. I'm still keeping my teeth off them.
Aaaaaghhh! I'm gnawing as I type! Stop it!!!! Just stop!
I want to stop this. What kind of a role-model am I for Muffin Man if I can't break this horrid, ugly, disgusting habit?

You can buy that stuff tastes putrid when you put your fingers in your mouth.
Maybe instead of berating yourself for failing at it, you could try making more positive, affirmative statements about your ability to change your behavior? And then you could congratulate yourself at each stage of success?
I mean, they tell me that it works. I tend to go more for the berating myself too.
Or sit on your hands?
Chew gum?
Maybe figure out what else is going on in your life that is bothering you ....
Hand cream! Expensive hand cream! Feels terrific, tastes disgusting. Treat yourself to Crabtree and Evelyn Gardners Friend hand creme in a tube-it's about 8.00 but it will do the trick. Every time you want to put them in your mouth, slather the crap on and your hands will be gorgeous before you know it!
Ah...expensive hand cream. Self-denial through self-indulgence. I like it. I like it!
Personally, I think you're a human role model. No one's perfect. Which isn't an argument against self-improvement, but finger-biting sure doesn't make you a bad mother or a bad role model.
Now if, say, you had confessed to skinning kittens in your spare time and taking video of it to post online.... That would be a different story.
Ouch! I hope you find something to make your fingers look/feel better.
I'm a nail biter, so I have no advice for you b/c I have been unable to break my own nasty habit.
Liz, these little things just make you more endearing : )
Are you stressed or is it just a habit?
Better to chew on your fingers than to binge eat half a tub of goldfish crackers. Not that I would know anything about that....
What's going on when you're gnawing? stress? anger? Muffin Man will learn how to take things one step at a time--he doesn't need to learn that his mama solves everything perfectly and easily. He'll learn that some things are hard to solve and take persistence.
But, ouch.
I like the expensive hand cream idea. Or just stick your fingers in your ears. Nothing tastes worse than ear wax.
I do that as well -- chewing cuticles until they bleed -- and I have never found a way to stop. I feel for you, and I have scar-tissuey fingers to show for my insistence.
