Hold everything.

Profgrrrrl has a post up about the newest security screenings at airports which brought up a comment which is leading to this post.

How many parents with infants and young toddlers are rethinking their plans to fly with their kids now that no liquids are allowed? I mean, what are they going to do about milk bottles?

Do the math: you get to the airport at least 2 hours early to get through the security check. If your flight is on time and you have the world's shortest flight, that's still an hour in the air. A half-hour to get out of the airport on the other side. Does anyone have an infant or young toddler who's willing to go nearly 4 hours at a minimum without milk? Does this mean only nursing babies can fly?

Yeesh.

I thought baby bottles were permitted but the mother had to "sample" the contents in front of the screeners.

But I agree in principle. If I had children, I would think twice about air travel.

Yes, I was going to say what Katrinka said. That's certainly the case with flights from the UK - mothers have to sample some of the milk at security to prove it's milk.

I believe that the TSA exception is for formula, pumped breastmilk, and juice (no mention of cow's milk for toddlers who don't do formula or juice, like Lyra--sure we can nurse, but my boobs need a break some times!!!). However, the new restrictions are apparently being applied unevenly (I have heard anecdotal stories about parents at BWI being told to dump formula and pumped breastmilk). And then what do you do with a kid who is too old for just formula but not ready to eat a sandwich or a packet of peanuts?

Check out this photo of a TSA screener in Denver confiscating a jar of baby food from the diaper bag of a pair of very shocked-looking parents. What are we coming to when stewed prunes constitute a threat to anything other than a clean diaper?

I will not be flying with Lyra until these restrictions are lifted, presumably sometime in mid to late November.
